Circles

Map the communities you are part of (some obvious and some not as obvious). When do you feel a sense of belonging? Having a place in the world around you can mean connecting with the people you see everyday, as well as with broader communities you identify with.

STEPS
1

You are connected to people you see everyday and to people you’ve never met before! The first step to deepening these relationships is to identify who you want to get to know better. Start by putting your name inside the inner circle — this represents you!

2

The circle around you represents the communities you are a part of that you interact with often. Add the names of a few communities you connect with to this circle, such as “family,” “friends,” “teachers,” “swim team,” “coworkers,” etc.

3

Within each of those communities, list the people who you feel closest with— people who you might turn to for support or for you to provide support to. Try to list at least 5 or 6 people for each group.

4

You are connected to many bigger communities, where you don’t necessarily know everyone in them. In this outer circle, list the communities you are a part of at a broader scale, such as, “women,” “students,” “vegetarians,” “Native Americans,” etc. What aspects of your identity make you part of these communities?

HABITS

Connect with intention

What people or groups do you want to get to know better? Why do they matter to you? Reach out to one person or group today— send a quick text, give someone a call, or reach out in another way. Set up some quality time to spend with them and let them know you value your relationship with them.

Make belonging personal

Who on your community map do you feel closest with? In what situations do you feel most comfortable? Who do you feel most recognized and heard by? Look for commonalities and patterns in how you feel. Finish the sentence: I feel a sense of belonging when __________.

Grow your circles of support

The communities we feel most connected to will grow and change over time— continue to add people to your map in the next few months. Use the map as a guide for noticing where you strengthen your relationships and where you might not— where do you want to continue to grow your circles?
